What are mothballs used for?

Western Answers

I keep finding moths in my closet, and someone told me to use mothballs. What exactly are they?

Mothballs, also known as naphthalene balls, are a form of DIY pest control designed to protect stored clothing and fabrics from insects such as clothes moths and carpet beetles. They come as small balls or cakes made with chemicals that slowly release fumes that kill pests inside sealed storage containers.

Do mothballs work for other pests?

No. Mothballs are only made to protect stored fabrics from insects like clothes moths and carpet beetles. They are not effective for larger pest problems in the home. For example, there is quite a lot of misinformation online about the use of mothballs to deter mice, but these products should only be used for their intended purpose. The same is true for attempting to use moth balls for snakes, rats, squirrels, or any other pests - this can pose health risks for people and pets and is unlikely to work effectively. Mothballs can be extremely hazardous as they can easily be mistaken for other common household items.

Are mothballs toxic?

Yes. Mothballs contain chemicals that release fumes, which can be harmful if inhaled, ingested, or used in unventilated spaces. Exposure may cause health issues for people and pets, which is why they should only be used exactly as directed on the product label.

If you choose to use them, only use products with a clear label and a valid EPA registration number.

Are mothballs an effective pest control solution?

Mothballs are not a reliable long-term method for managing pests. They are toxic, can cause serious harm if ingested accidentally, and their fumes can be hazardous. Their use is also limited to protecting stored fabrics from certain insects, and they do not solve larger or more complex infestations in the home.
