Do wasps reuse nests?

“I found an old wasp nest in my garage from last year — will wasps return to an old nest?”

In almost all cases, wasps do not reuse nests. Most wasp species, including common paper wasps and yellowjackets, build a brand new nest each spring. As temperatures drop in the fall, the colony dies off, leaving only newly mated queens to survive the winter. Come spring, those queens start fresh, building a new nest from scratch rather than returning to the old one.

While wasps almost always build new nests, they can return to the same general area. They look for sheltered spots that offer protection from the elements and easy access to the outside. Common nesting sites include roof eaves, wall cavities, loft spaces, garden sheds, garages, and hollow trees. Some species, like yellowjackets, also nest underground, in old rodent burrows or gaps in the soil.
