Do decoy wasp nests work?

“I want to prevent wasps this summer. Do wasp decoy nests work?”

In a word, no. The idea behind a wasp decoy nest is that wasps are territorial, so hanging a fake wasp nest near your home should signal to any scouting queen that the area is already taken. In theory, she'll move on and build elsewhere. In practice, though, the evidence doesn't back it up.

What we do have is plenty of real-world evidence pointing the other way: wasps have been observed building nests directly next to existing ones. Different species don't always recognize each other's nests as a threat, and ground-nesting species won't be deterred by something hanging from a tree or eave at all.

So what does deter wasps? While decoys aren't reliable, a few practical steps can make your property less attractive to nesting wasps:

• Seal entry points: Check eaves, soffits, and wall gaps in early spring
• Secure trash cans with tight-fitting lids
• Remove food sources: Keep outdoor dining areas clean and cover sugary drinks
• Trim back vegetation: Overgrown shrubs and trees offer sheltered nesting spots
• Check early in the season: Small, walnut-sized nests are far easier to deal with than established ones
