How can I tell if the tiny black bug I’ve seen is a flea?

Western Answers

I keep seeing tiny black bugs around my property. How can I tell if they are fleas or another type of pest?

Spotting a tiny black bug hopping across the floor often makes people think they’re dealing with fleas. Whilst that may be true, other pests can look very similar. Some beetles, small black mites, bed bugs and gnats can all be mistaken for fleas. They can move fast and are tricky to spot.

To help determine the pest, take a closer look and monitor the way they move. Fleas are fast jumpers, using their powerful hind legs to leap several inches, often from pets to carpets, bedding, or furniture. Their narrow, tall bodies are built for quick, erratic movement. In contrast, bed bugs and other types of mites tend to crawl slowly across the floor. Fleas don’t have wings so if it flies, you have spotted another type of insect.

How to stop flea infestations

Whether it’s small black fleas or another pest, infestations can spread quickly and it’s important to try and identify the specific pest to determine the most effective treatment. Fleas can be tough to control and infestations can quickly spread due to their rapid breeding cycle.
