How to keep snakes away from your house?

Western Answers

I’m worried about snakes getting into my yard or house. What can I do to keep them away?

It can be really unsettling to spot a snake anywhere near your property! Snakes often come close to homes seeking shelter or food sources. Tall grass, wood piles, or clutter around the yard can create places for them to hide. Some snakes, like bull snakes, may even make their way into basements or garages if there are gaps they can slip through.

You can take steps to make your property less inviting:

  • Keep grass trimmed and remove yard debris
  • Store firewood away from the house and off the ground
  • Seal gaps around the foundation and under doors
  • Address rodent problems, since rodents attract snakes
  • Avoid using unsafe DIY traps for snakes, which are often ineffective and risky.

Preventative steps like trimming grass, sealing gaps, and clearing clutter can go a long way in reducing the chances of snakes moving onto your property. It’s also a good idea to research the specific snakes in your area to learn what they look like, their habits and most importantly help determine the necessary level of caution, especially if venomous species are present.

The most effective way to secure your property is to install snake fencing—a fine mesh barrier about three feet high that is firmly embedded in the ground around the perimeter and under structures like decks.
