Do mothballs keep rats away?

Western Answers

I’ve seen signs of rats and wondered if mothballs might help. Will mothballs deter rats?

There is a lot of misinformation online about the effectiveness of using mothballs for rats or mice, but they are not designed to help tackle an active rodent problem. Mothballs are designed to eliminate fabric pests such as clothes moths and carpet beetles - not to repel rats, mice, or any other animals. Using them in a manner not specified on the label can be hazardous to people, pets, and the environment. The labels on these DIY mothball products should clearly outline how, where, and when they can be used, just like any other pesticide.

Mothballs contain naphthalene, a substance with a strong smell that some consider a rodent deterrent. While ingesting or inhaling high amounts of naphthalene can damage blood cells, preventing them from carrying oxygen, the amount in standard mothballs is minimal and insufficient to effectively deter rodents.

What actually helps to keep rats away?

Real progress starts with limiting food, water, and shelter. That means storing food in sturdy containers, cleaning up crumbs, sealing trash, and removing clutter where rats may hide. Blocking entry points is also important: small gaps around pipes, vents, or foundations give rats easy access.
