Do fire pits keep mosquitoes away?

Western Answers

“We’re having guests over for the evening, but I’m worried about mosquitoes. We have a fire pit – does smoke repel mosquitoes?”

A fire pit can keep mosquitoes away because they don't like smoke. It interferes with their ability to detect carbon dioxide and body heat, which they use to track us down. A wood-burning fire pit can help to discourage mosquitoes from hanging around nearby, at least while the fire is going strong, but it’s not 100% effective.

Heat plays a role, too. Mosquitoes are most active in warm, but not extreme, temperatures, so the intense heat near a fire can make the immediate area less appealing to them.

That said, there are limits to how effective a fire pit is as a mosquito repellent:

  • Protection is limited to the area directly around the fire
  • Wind direction matters; if smoke is blowing away from you, the benefit drops off quickly
  • Gas-burning fire pits produce little to no smoke, so they offer almost no deterrent effect

While a fire pit might offer some protection for an evening, it’s not a long-term solution. If mosquitoes are a persistent issue in your outdoor spaces, it's worth looking at the root causes. Our mosquito control services target adult mosquitoes, larvae, and breeding sites directly, giving you comprehensive protection that a fire pit cannot match.
