Do dryer sheets prevent mosquitoes?

Dryer sheets, or fabric softener sheets, are not a reliable way to repel mosquitoes. A scented sheet sitting in your pocket might mask your scent for a few minutes, but the effect fades fast outdoors and it won't stop a hungry female mosquito from finding you. Most pest researchers and entomologists agree this trick falls into the "myth" category.

The idea took off because dryer sheets contain fragrance chemicals like linalool that mosquitoes find mildly off-putting. The problem is dose and exposure. A single sheet doesn't release nearly enough scent to create a protective zone around your body, especially in moving air. Mosquitoes track CO2 and body heat, not just smell, so they still can find you.

If bites are a daily problem, the issue is usually a breeding source somewhere on the property. A targeted mosquito control plan finds those hot spots and treats them at the source.
