What do fruit fly eggs look like to the human eye?

Western Answers

I think fruit flies are breeding somewhere in my kitchen—can you see fly eggs?

Fruit fly eggs are extremely small—about 0.5 millimeters long—making them nearly impossible to see with the naked eye. They're oval-shaped, white or pale yellow, and typically laid on or near fermenting fruit, vegetables, or other organic matter.

Because of their tiny size, you're unlikely to spot individual eggs. However, if fruit flies have been active in your kitchen, eggs may be present in clusters on overripe produce, in sink drains, or around garbage bins.

How to tell if fruit flies have laid eggs

While the eggs themselves are hard to see, there are clear signs that fruit flies are breeding in your home:

  • Adult fruit flies are hovering around fruit bowls, trash cans, or drains
  • Larvae (maggots) visible on rotting fruit—these are small, white, worm-like creatures
  • Increased fly activity over a few days, indicating eggs have hatched and a new generation has emerged

Fruit flies reproduce quickly, with females laying up to 500 eggs in their short lifespan. Eggs hatch within 24 to 30 hours, so a small problem can escalate fast.

If you're dealing with persistent fruit flies or suspect an infestation, professional fly control can help to eliminate the source and prevent future breeding. Our team can also assist with identifying insect eggs if you're unsure what you're dealing with.
