Are ticks active during the winter months?

Western Answers

Do ticks die in the winter, and do I still need to worry about them when it's cold outside?

While tick activity does slow down during colder months, ticks can remain active in winter under the right conditions. Some species, like the blacklegged tick (deer tick), can survive and even seek hosts when temperatures rise above freezing—around 35°F or higher. On milder winter days, especially in areas with fluctuating temperatures, you might still encounter ticks in the winter months.

Do ticks hibernate?

Not exactly. Unlike some insects that enter true hibernation, ticks become dormant when it's very cold but can quickly become active again during warm spells. They often hide in leaf litter, under logs, or in other sheltered spots where they're insulated from harsh weather. This means that even in January or February, a sunny afternoon could bring ticks out searching for a meal.
