Does boric acid kill termites?

Many homeowners look for DIY options to deal with termites, and one of the most common questions is whether using boric acid for termites is effective. While these substances can impact termites on contact, they are not a complete solution for a termite infestation.

What is boric acid and borax?

Borax is a naturally occurring mineral, often sold as a cleaning or laundry additive. When processed, it can become boric acid, which has been used in pesticides for insects like ants, cockroaches, and termites. Both borax and boric acid can interfere with how insects digest food and act as a desiccant, dehydrating them. While borax and boric acid are related, they are not the same chemical.

Does borax kill termites?

Borax and boric acid can be toxic to termites when ingested, and in controlled conditions, they can kill termites that come into direct contact with them. While this makes it a tempting option for getting rid of termites at home, it’s not quite the perfect solution.

The challenge is that termites live in hidden colonies, often inside walls, ceilings, or deep soil. DIY borax termite treatments might affect a small number of termites on the surface, but reaching the full colony with a DIY solution will be a challenge.

Frequently asked questions

Boric acid is sometimes used in household pest control, but applying it for termites can be tricky. Incorrect use indoors could expose people or pets to unnecessary risks.

Borax may kill termites it directly contacts, but most of a colony lives hidden inside the soil or the wood they eat. Since borax cannot penetrate these areas, the infestation continues. A further limitation is that borax does not last when exposed to moisture.

A thorough inspection and professional plan are the most effective solutions for long-term control. Our local technicians can inspect your property and walk you through the most appropriate treatments based on your property and the level of infestation.
