What are some plants that eat bugs?

Western Answers

I’ve heard of the Venus flytrap, but what are some other insect-eating plants?

Carnivorous plants grow in poor soil, so they supplement nutrients by trapping small prey such as flies, gnats, mosquitoes, ants, beetles, and even small spiders. Some larger species, like tropical pitcher plants, have been known to capture small frogs or slugs, too. While they’re not a fix for household infestations, they’re fascinating nonetheless. Here are some plants that eat bugs:

  • Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula): Famous “snap” traps that close when trigger hairs are touched.
  • North American pitcher plants (Sarracenia): Upright tubes; insects slip inside and are digested in liquid.
  • Tropical pitcher plants (Nepenthes): Hanging pitchers with nectar-lured rims; function like natural pitfall traps.
  • Sundews (Drosera): Leaves covered in sticky, glistening hairs; the leaf slowly curls around the insect.
  • Butterworts (Pinguicula): Flat, sticky leaves that catch tiny flies and gnats on windowsills.
  • Bladderworts (Utricularia): Aquatic or bog plants with tiny “bladders” that vacuum in small water creatures.
  • Cobra lily (Darlingtonia californica): Hooded pitcher with deceptive light windows that mislead insects deeper.
  • Cape sundew (Drosera capensis):  Easy-to-grow sundew; good example of insect-eating plants in homes.

These aren't flesh-eating plant monsters, but are one of nature's natural pest controllers, which may trap and kill the odd gnat or fly. However, if you are dealing with an insect infestation, plants won't solve it and you might need professional pest control.
