Most wasps are daytime insects. At night, they rest in the nest and activity drops, so they can seem dormant at night, but they’re not truly asleep like people. You’ll see the most movement on warm, sunny days; cool mornings can be slower, then activity ramps up by midday. A few tropical species show some night activity, but in yards and neighborhoods, wasps are not nocturnal.
If you spot one after dark, it was likely disturbed by light, noise, or vibration. If a wasp or hornet gets inside at night, it may fly toward lamps or windows.
If you’re dealing with a nest near doors, windows, or play areas, avoid swatting or spraying it during the day or night: startled and disturbed wasps can sting as they defend their nests. If anyone is stung and has severe swelling, hives, or trouble breathing, seek medical care right away.
