What are these tiny flies in my house?

I keep seeing tiny flying bugs in my house — they're not regular flies, they're really small. What are they, and how do I get rid of them?

Those tiny flies hovering around your kitchen are almost always one of three things: fruit flies, drain flies, or fungus gnats. They're all small, they all show up fast, and they all have one thing in common — they need a food or moisture source to survive. 

Fruit flies are the most common culprit. They're those tiny flying bugs in your kitchen, often drawn to overripe fruit, fermenting liquids, and anything sweet that's been left out.

Drain flies breed in the organic buildup inside your drains and pipes, and fungus gnats tend to come in on houseplants and thrive in damp soil.

A few flies here, and there is one thing, but if you're seeing very small flying bugs in your house consistently, in large numbers, or in multiple areas, it's worth taking a closer look. Drain flies in particular can be a sign of a deeper plumbing issue or significant organic buildup that's hard to clear without professional help.
