How to stop roaches moving with you?

Western Answers

My apartment has a roach infestation and I’m moving out soon. How can I make sure I don’t bring them with me?

Moving out of a building or apartment which has had a roach infestation can be stressful, especially if you’re worried about taking pests to your new home. Roaches hide in boxes, appliances, and even small cracks, so knowing the signs and limiting the chances of them hitching a lift to your new home is key.

Here are steps that can help:

  • Avoid using cardboard boxes when packing as they provide roaches with the perfect place to hide. They can easily nibble holes in the outside and sneak inside. Use sealed plastic boxes instead
  • Clean and check everything before packing. Pay special attention to appliances. Roaches can lay their eggs in tiny cracks and crevices and electrical appliances offer perfect hiding spots. Ideally use clear plastic bags to store appliances so you can carefully check them again before unpacking
  • Wash clothes, linens, and fabrics in hot water and pack them in sealed bags
  • Check kitchen items thoroughly especially items stored in pantries and kitchen cupboards where roaches may have been active.
