How do you use borax on ants?

I’m seeing ants in my kitchen. Will sugar and borax take care of them, and is it safe to use around the home?

Many DIY guides recommend using borax to control ants by mixing it with sugar and water. The sugar attracts the ants, while the borax is meant to be carried back to the colony. There are numerous borax ant killer recipes available online, but it’s best to be aware of the risks before trying them for yourself. 

This DIY method is often unreliable because different ant species require specific treatments and may ignore the bait. Additionally, getting the mixture, safe placement, and dosage correct can be challenging.

Borax is poisonous, and it can be harmful if touched or swallowed, especially for children and pets. Due to this, using borax and sugar to kill ants at home carries safety risks that may outweigh the benefits. Borax can help reduce ant activity in the short term, but is unlikely to help eliminate a large colony.
