Why do ants walk in a line?

I'm curious. Why do ants always walk in a line?

Ants follow chemical signals called pheromones, which are left behind by scout ants that have already found a food source. Once a scout locates something worth eating, it heads back to the colony and lays down a pheromone trail as it goes. 

Other ants pick up that scent and follow it, reinforcing the trail as they travel back and forth.

The result is that neat, single-file line you see marching across your kitchen counter or along your baseboard. The more ants that use the trail, the stronger the scent becomes, and the more ants follow it. It's an efficient system, and it's one of the reasons ants are so hard to stop once they've found their way in.
