How to identify bed bugs: Bed bugs are small and oval in shape. Adults grow up to 5mm long and can be spotted if you know where to look.
Like all insects, bed bugs start life as an egg. These are white, oblong, and about 1mm long. Bed bug nymphs feed on blood, making their body swell and changing their color to a red-brown.
The nymphs grow through five stages, called instars. Bed bugs shed their skins at each stage, leaving behind empty shells.
After the fifth instar stage, the bed bug becomes an adult.
