About Matt
Matt Green, PhD, is a principal entomologist at Rentokil Initial, where he leads and supports entomological research projects, field trials, and innovations in urban pest management.
His work spans product development, laboratory research, and applied testing, helping translate scientific theory into practical pest control solutions.
An urban entomologist with a multidisciplinary background, Matt specializes in the relationship between pest species and the built environment. His expertise includes wood-boring insect biology, timber decay and degradation, urban insect control, disease-vector management, mycology, pesticide chemistry, and building defect analysis.

Matt has spent more than 18 years at Rentokil Initial, supporting entomological projects and field trials across the company’s global operations.
As a principal entomologist, he manages the entomology laboratory and leads a range of research projects, field studies, and best-practice testing initiatives focused on urban pest management. His work combines laboratory bioassays, product feasibility testing, data analysis, and project management to help develop and validate new pest control technologies.
Matt has contributed to innovation projects, including the development of commercially viable UV LED insect light traps, fungal insecticide solutions for controlling sewer cockroaches, and bed bug monitoring devices.
Before joining Rentokil Initial, Matt worked as a conservation scientist and surveyor for a specialist timber decay consultancy. He provided expert assessments of timber in historic buildings, advised on the prevention and remediation of wood-destroying pests, carried out condition surveys and decay analysis, and contributed to building conservation plans. His role also included expert witness work and support for legal disputes.
Matt’s interest in the interaction between pest species and the built environment began with his doctoral research in wood science and wood-boring insect ecology. Throughout his career, he has worked across a range of urban entomology fields, including termite monitoring, fly behavior research, urban mosquito program management, cockroach control, and bed bug monitoring.
