Bed bug treatments

As the experts in bed bug control, Western Exterminator’s proven approach to bed bugs involves education, early detection, and effective removal methods. Your local Western Exterminator Technician will carry out a thorough bed bug inspection and recommend treatments depending on the severity of the infestation.

We take a sensitive and sympathetic approach recognizing how emotional and stressful a bed bug infestation may be. That means we work with you, your family, or your business to provide treatment services with as little disruption and as much discretion as possible.

Our solution to eliminate bed bugs in your home or business may involve a combination of the following treatment options:

Bed bug heat treatment

Widely regarded as one of the most effective bed bug removal solutions, heat treatments are a chemical-free process effective against bed bugs and insect pests.

Recognized to be an environmentally-friendly treatment option, heat treatment is a low-risk, non-toxic bed bug treatment option that minimizes disruption and replacement costs - no need for replacement or disposal of infected items. Affected areas, furniture and upholstery items can be used after the treatment with complete peace of mind.

Heat treatments eliminate all stages of an insect’s life cycle - from egg to adult. Portable heaters are used to gradually heat the ambient air to above 120º F while the area is monitored by temperature sensors and infrared thermometers. The high temperature is held for approximately one and a half to three hours, getting rid of bed bugs thoroughly - in a single treatment.

Thermal pest control is safe and effective, involving increases or decreases in temperature to eradicate pests. Here are the basics of the benefits of heat treatments:

  • No toxic chemicals
  • One day treatment options
  • No moving out
  • No odors or lingering smells
  • The heat is evenly distributed throughout the structure reaching all cracks and crevices

Bed bug fumigation services

Structural fumigation involves completely tarping your property and releasing fumigant gas to permeate every inch of the structure, including walls and under floors. The chemicals penetrate all items within the fumigation space and are highly effective in eliminating all stages of bed bugs present in one single treatment.

During the bed bug fumigation treatment, all tenants, pets, and plants will need to be evacuated for several days. Benefits include:

  • Chemicals rapidly penetrate structural materials

  • Disperses quickly during the venting process

  • Non-Flammable

  • Non-Corrosive

  • Leaves no odor or residue

  • Can be used on sensitive materials and electronics

Bed bug insecticide treatment

Conventional insecticide treatment remains our primary and most common approach for the removal of bed bugs. Several insecticide formulations, including liquids, dusts, and aerosols are typically required for a thorough bed bug service due to the varying types of surfaces, materials, and circumstances encountered.

Dusts are excellent tools to use when treating for bed bugs. These formulations tend to last longer than their liquid counterparts and can be easily applied into voids where liquids may not reach or should not be applied. Aerosols are also convenient tools, especially when fitted with a crack and crevice tip to allow direct application into cracks and crevices where bed bugs hide.

Bed bug insecticide treatment usually begins at the focal point of the infestation, which is, in most cases, the bed in an infested room. This will be followed by careful treatment of all items in the vicinity;  including baseboards, floor and wall junctions, tack strips under carpets, behind electrical outlets and switches, cracks in the walls and floors, wall-mounted items, and relevant structural voids. The intent is to treat every possible hiding place to ensure bed bugs - at all stages of their life cycle - are completely eliminated.

Bed bug steam treatment

Steam remediation treatments work by delivering lethal temperatures into deep recesses and inaccessible areas where bed bugs hide. The use of steam is effective for killing bed bugs in all stages of development and allows Western Exterminator Technicians to treat fabric surfaces such as mattresses, box springs, and upholstered furniture which usually prohibit the use of insecticides.

The treatment is chemical-free and effective in moving bed bugs out of cracks and crevices within furniture, making them more likely to expose themselves and move into contact with applied insecticides (if any).

Bed bug mattress covers

Encasing your mattress in a high quality bed bug mattress cover is a good preventative measure for keeping bed bugs out of your box spring and mattress. It eliminates bed bug entry and escape points, removes potential hiding places, and stops them from feeding on you, your family and your guests in the middle of the night.

The benefits of bed bug mattress covers include:

  • Preventing re-infestations
  • Reduces the number of pest harborage (hiding) areas
  • Aids in the early detection of bed bugs
  • Cool and comfortable to sleep on while offering complete protection against allergens, dust mites and bed bugs

Bed bug mattress and box spring encasements are amongst the most reliable and affordable solutions for preventing bed bug infestations; making visual inspections and getting rid of bed bugs from the surface a much more straightforward process.

Do I have to throw out an infested mattress?

Instead of throwing your mattress away, do the following:

  1. Take off all the bedding and linens, carefully move them to your laundry room, and wash in high heat.
  2. Do not move the mattress or box spring to another area. Doing so can easily spread the bed bugs.
  3. Hire a bed bug exterminator to treat your home (mattress included) with heat, steam, or other treatment.

When you discover bed bugs in your property, take caution before throwing anything away. Tossing your mattress or box spring will not solve the problem, and moving them can be risky as it may introduce bed bugs into other rooms. If you get a brand-new mattress to replace your infested one before your property has been treated for the bugs, you can be sure your new items may well get infested, too! This is why it’s so crucial to have your entire home treated for bed bugs, not just certain spots.

Do I have to throw out infested furniture?

You should not have to throw out any items whatsoever during a bed bug infestation. When your property is treated by a professional, all of your items should be salvageable. Instead of throwing out items, it’s recommended to wash what you can in a high heat washing machine. Extreme temperatures are known to kill bed bugs in all stages of their life cycle.

Even infested furniture should be OK to keep after an infestation if your exterminator has treated it. That said, if you already have old furniture in need of replacing, a bed bug infestation would be the perfect excuse to invest in new items! Simply remember to only dispose of furniture after it has been treated!
