What does a mole look like?

Mole identification

  • Size: 4-7 inches long
  • Color: Variety of colors, including black, gray, and brown
  • Body: Long head, snout, and small eyes with big paws for digging

Different species of moles

The Pacific Coast states have four species of moles:

  • Broad-footed mole (Scapanus latimanus) - located from south-central Oregon to northern Baja California (Mexico)
  • Coast mole (Scapanus orarius) - located in areas of Washington and Oregon and coastal northwestern California
  • Townsend’s mole (Scapanus townsendii) - located in Oregon, Washington, and northwestern California
  • Shrew-mole (Neurotrichus gibbsii) - located in western Washington, western Oregon, and part of western California

Signs of moles in your yard

Yard damage

One sure sign of moles in your yard is molehills. Molehills form when moles dig into the soil to create their tunnels. A key difference between molehills and gopher mounds is that gopher mounds are usually kidney-shaped, whereas molehills are more cone-shaped.

Shallow tunnels

Most moles live underground the majority of the time and create shallow tunnels just below the surface of the soil. These tunnels look like raised ridges through the ground and are frequently connected to other tunnels. Moles use these shallow tunnels to catch prey.

Deep tunnels

Moles also create deep tunnels that can be found several inches to a foot under the surface of the ground. Moles use the deep tunnels for shelter and will live in them during severe weather conditions. They will also use them to store food.

How to get rid of moles

Professional mole removal is recommended at the first sign of moles in your yard. Though DIY mole control may seem appealing, it will not leave you with complete control of the moles, resulting in a lot more damage to your yard.

At Western Exterminator, our Technicians will work with you to determine the best mole control method for your property. Traps can be effective but are not always the best option as they can be dangerous to non-target animals and people and can also be time-consuming due to state requirements. A registered pesticide can be used in place of traps to control the moles in the burrow.

All Western Exterminator Technicians are professionally trained and state certified in mole control. Our Technicians know the habits of moles and will use their knowledge to implement the perfect mole control plan.

How Western Exterminator gets rid of moles

The best way to eliminate moles, gophers, or some other wildlife pest is to call in a professional. Just missing a couple of moles or mole tunnels can cause a new or larger infestation. It takes a professional mole control Technician to spot all of the places where moles are hiding and provide the right treatment to get rid of moles in your yard.

If you think moles are ruining your yard, contact Western Exterminator for control. We will help you get rid of your mole issue so you can feel at peace on your property.
