Some spiders, ants, bees, hornets, and wasps inject venom when biting or stinging. People often have a reaction to these that causes a large reddened area that is quite painful.
Some other bug attacks may need treatment, such as a bee sting, when the bee leaves its stinger in the host. Removing the stinger and treating with ointments may reduce the pain and swelling.
