Watch Out for Christmas Tree Stowaways

In the rush to prepare for and celebrate Christmas, be aware that your beautiful Douglas Fir and decorations could be home to unwanted pests who are hoping for a merry little Christmas inside your warm house. ThinkstockPhotos-497122536

Before you go to the corner lot to buy a tree, get your ornaments out of the attic and examine them. Check the boxes for any signs of rodent infestation. Mice and rats may have chewed their way into the box and set up house. If you see any holes in the container or any mouse droppings inside the box, be careful. A mouse might escape inside your living room where it can start a new nest in your furniture or walls. Spiders can also be living in the boxes, so be sure to look for any hidden pests hoping for a little Christmas pudding.

When you bring your new tree home, examine it before you bring it inside. Spiders, mice and other pests might be living in the tree. Once they get inside your home, you’ll likely need to hire a spider extermination service. Shake the tree’s branches, and peer inside the tree so that you can see if any bugs or vermin are hanging onto the tree trunk. Getting rid of mice isn’t easy. If you bring mice into your house, you’ll need to hire a pest control company to get rid of them.

Your pantry could also be home to a number of bugs or mice that have burrowed into your flour or other baking products. If you see gnaw marks or holes in the bag or box, you have mice in your pantry. Green pest control is necessary to rid your pantry of unwanted inhabitants.
