Silverfish are not as harmful as you may think

You’re looking for that old photograph album because the kids want to know what you looked like in high school. You head to the basement, or the top closet shelf, and find the box in which you’re pretty sure you stored it. You notice tearing or what appear to be bite marks on the outside. Opening the box brings a shriek from you as some small silver insects scoot out! Shuddering, you dump out the contents of the box and find many of your papers and book bindings eaten through. What were those bugs? Why have they been eating away your memories? Should you call a bug control company?

Silverfish are small wingless insects that grow to about an inch in length. Found in humid, damp areas such as basements, attics, kitchens, and bathrooms, they multiply rapidly. They don’t like a lot of attention, however, so do a great job at remaining hidden. What we see is what they leave behind: bite marks, small holes, and spilled grain or cereal. They can often be spotted running along a baseboard or the rim of the kitchen sink, but they will scurry away when they realize they’ve been spotted. If you see one or two, assume you have a lot more.

These insects love carbohydrates, so they are attracted to glue, wallpaper, cereal boxes, book bindings, and clothing stored in boxes. They have even been known to defy logic and get into unopened packages of food! It is important to get rid of pests like these before they contaminate food supplies.

If you have silverfish, call Western Exterminator. We are the professionals at exterminating pests such as these. Our technicians will come to your home and ensure you are rid of your unwelcome skittering visitors. Controlling pests is what we do best, so call us today!

For many people, a lot comes to mind when they think of Western Exterminator. As much as we love our yellow trucks and our Little Man logo, we hope the most important thing that comes to mind is our service. The best customer service for a fair price has been the foundation of our business since we first opened in 1921. In a business climate where change is constant, we’re proud to still have the same values that have led to our growth and success for nearly 100 years.
