What could be better than spending several days kicking the tires on dozens of new products that prevent or eliminate pests, and hearing from some of the pest management industry’s most respected rodent, ant, bed bug and business experts? In my book, that’s hard to beat!
I recently attended PestWorld 2012 in Boston, the world’s largest meeting of pest management professionals, and left with notebooks full of new ideas on how to keep Western Exterminator’s commercial and residential pest management services “The Best in the West.”
Wow, what a show! There were more than 100 hours of education sessions, a trade show with more than 100 exhibitors, and I was able to reconnect with old colleagues and make some new friends with fellow pest management professionals from across the country and around the globe.
I walked the trade show floor with Western Exterminator’s President Michael Katz and V.P. General Manager Tom Anfora, where we reviewed the numerous new products and services exhibitors had to offer pest management professionals.
If anyone thinks the bed bug pandemic has crested, think again. These nasty (disgusting is a word that might also apply!) pests invade homes, apartments, hospitals, hotels and college dormitories, and remain at the top of the “most wanted” list for pest management professionals across the United States.
By my count there were 62 – yes 62 – exhibitors who offered bed bug related products or services. Everything from a bed bug baker – a tent-like gizmo that goes over beds and furniture during a heat treatment – to trainers of bed bug sniffing dogs (none better, however, than or own four-legged bed bug sniffing expert Honey!).
There were exhibitors with products for everything from rodent control and mold remediation, to GPS tracking for service vehicles and computer software. I had to check an extra carry-on for the flight home just for all the sales literature I collected!
Of course the crucial thing is to critically look at each of these new products and determine which ones are the ones that will make our jobs easier and more effective from the ones that are flawed and not worth the investment. My experience shows me there are always products that become stars while others fade into the sunset never to return. It does take a discerning eye to know which is which, and I do consider this one of my strong suits!
And while the trade show was visually interesting, the 100 hours of education sessions were intellectually stimulating. I enjoyed listening to some of the best and brightest minds in the pest management industry talk about what’s new in ant, rodent, bed bug, fly and cockroach control.
The information presented by the speakers got my top hat spinning with new ideas on how our Technical Division and Service Technicians can enhance and expand their industry-leading service practices for both our commercial and residential customers.
One of the hot topics at the show was the impact the Food Safety Modernization Act will have on the food processing industry. And of course food processing plants are dependent on effective pest control to manufacture their products.
Western Exterminator services a number of food processing, storage and handling facilities, and the new regulations being set in place by the Food & Drug Administration to better protect our nation’s food supply will impact the manner in which those facilities are serviced, inspected and audited for pests.
Of course, our in-house team of registered sanitarians is fully versed in these areas, but I look forward to reviewing my findings with them to see how we can better service our customers.
I look forward to sharing my notes from this session too with our Commercial Services team as we put programs in place to meet these latest regulatory requirements and are ready to advise our clients on what needs to be done when it comes to keeping food industry facilities compliant and pest-free.
If you have pests taking a tour of your home or office give Western Exterminator a call or send me an e-mail at AskMrLittle@WesternExterminator.com. I’ll be sure to get back to you right away with information on how Western Exterminator can help.
Until next time, thanks for making Western Exterminator “The Final Word in Pest Control®”
Have a pest free day!
