One of the more dangerous ants that you might have on your property are fire ants. They are also known as Red Imported Fire Ants, which first came to the United States from Brazil in the 30s. They get their name from the fact that they are red in color and that they aggressively sting any threat that comes near them, producing an intense burning sensation in those who are bitten.
Fire ants sting by gripping the person they are stinging with their mandibles and then repeatedly plunging their stinger into the victim. They are venomous and the effects range from rashes and red bumps to nausea to more serious reactions.

There are several signs that the ants you have might be fire ants. Red imported fire ants are very small, reddish/brown in color. They tend to stay outside, preferring to stay far away from people in the nearby homes. However, in their search for food, they can come indoors through even the tiniest of openings.
Red imported fire ants build mounds in the yard. These mounds look like hills of loose dirt. Unlike some other ants, there will not be a central hole near the top. Be cautious, however, since any perceived threat to the nest will cause hundreds of fire ants to swarm out of the mound and attack!
Queen red imported fire ant queens are about ⅓ inches in length. Females fire ants that have wings depart from the mound and mate. Winged red imported fire ants like flying post-rain, in warm conditions. The fire ant queen then generally drops to ground level, gets rid of her wings and initiates a colony by digging a hole.
Mature red imported fire ant queens are capable of laying hundreds of eggs per day. Hatching occurs after 7 to 10 days. A red imported fire ant colony can have one queen or it can have multiple queens.
