Celebrating National Pest Management Month

spring pest control

April is always a time for boundless optimism.

Baseball fans head off to Opening Day knowing their favorite team is in first place (at least for a day!) and say, “This could be the year.” Unless you are a Chicago Cubs fan, of course.

Homeowners start their spring cleaning and get rid of all of winter’s clutter, and the project list for things to do in and around our home and yard get longer by the minute.

April is also National Pest Management month and my optimism about keeping your living or working environment pest-free is more than a glass half full – it’s overflowing!

The highly trained and knowledgeable pest management professionals from Western Exterminator Company know a home or business is no place for annoying and potentially harmful pests.

To celebrate the valuable services the men and women of the pest management industry provide to customers across the United States, my colleagues and I at Western Exterminator want to share some important information on how pests can go from a nuisance to a hazard faster than a hot dog vendor spreads mustard on an LA Dodger Dog!

  • Feeling the Pressure! Pest pressure increases significantly in spring and summer, which is why simple measures like sealing cracks and crevices around the home, keeping kitchen counters and floors clean and free of crumbs, sealing garbage cans and eliminating sources of standing water on your property can go a long way in preventing pests from making a home in yours.
  • Taking a Bite Out of Your Home! Some pests, including termites, rodents and ants can cause costly damage to the structure of a home. Termites and carpenter ants have the ability to chew through wood beams, walls, floors and even wallpaper. Rodents can start house fires if they gnaw through electrical wiring or build nests close to heat sources.
  • Get A Termite Inspection. Termites can pose a major threat to the structural integrity of your home or business but according to a recent National Pest Management Association report, 52% of homeowners have failed to have a proper inspection done. Yikes – no wonder termites have the attitude of invincibility!
  • Public Health Threats.  Commonly encountered pests such as cockroaches, mosquitoes and stinging insects pose health threats to humans. Cockroach allergens are known to trigger asthma attacks, especially in children. Mosquitoes, meanwhile, can carry West Nile virus and stinging insects send more than half a million people to the emergency room every year. Ouch!
  • A Pest That’s Itching to Bother You. Bed bugs are highly mobile and highly annoying to customers who have suffered through an infestation at home or while traveling. Bed bugs are active at night and bite you while you are sleeping, leaving small red bite marks and an annoying itching sensation that will have you seeing red!
  • Pests Are Bad for Business. If you own or manage a restaurant, bakery, hotel, healthcare facility or grocery store, you know pests are bad for business. Pests such as rodents, flies and stored products pests can spoil food, introduce deadly bacteria to your facility, and lead to significant financial losses and extensive damage to your reputation.

Protecting the public health and structures from the harmful antics of pests is what the professionals at Western Exterminator Company do on a daily basis. We couldn’t be prouder of the important role we play in keeping your family and customers safe from pests.

If pests are a problem in your home or business, the team at Western Exterminator can help. Send me an e-mail at AskMrLittle@WesternExterminator.com and I’ll be sure to get back to you right away with an answer to your pest problem.

When It Comes To Commercial Pest Management, The Man In The Top Hat Is Tops

Western Exterminator Commercial Pest Control

The travel website TripAdvisor lists more than 4,000 restaurants and 300 hotels for Los Angeles, and more than 3,000 restaurants and 350 hotels for Orange County. If you can’t find a place to please your finicky palate with all those choices, then you better stay in and whip out the cookbook!

Why are those numbers interesting to me? Because each and every one of those restaurants and hotels, as well as thousands of other commercial structures including grocery stores, office buildings, sports stadiums and arenas, hospitals, food warehouses and bakeries (just to name a few) need to be concerned about keeping unwanted, unhealthy pests out.

Commercial pest management has been a specialty of Western Exterminator since our founding in 1921. We have been protecting commercial properties in Arizona, Nevada and California for  nearly a century, and have some of the industry’s finest, most knowledgeable Service Technicians on the job.

Western Exterminator knows our commercial clients have businesses to run, customers to serve and brands to protect. That’s why our Commercial Division championed the concept of delivering pest management services to our commercial customers when they needed them – day or night – when THEIR customers aren’t around.

Our commercial customers rely on us to eliminate bed bugs from hotel rooms, keep rodents and birds out of grocery stores (they always take 14 items in the 12 items or less line!), get rid of drain flies from sinks at the local tavern, and keep cockroaches out of the break room kitchen.

These pests, which are unsightly to say the least and to my way of thinking just disgusting, can also spread diseases including E coli and salmonella, and have a destructive streak in them as well. Did you know rodents can chew through electrical wires (a common way for fires to start) and termites can easily devour wood posts supporting the deck overlooking the view off your restaurant?

Preventing and eliminating pests from spoiling and contaminating food is one of our Commercial Division’s most important jobs. Western Exterminator’s program for servicing integrated food handling facility services is supplemented by our on-staff entomologists and registered sanitarians, and helps assure compliance with today’s extensive food safety regulations.

Western Exterminator provides complete inspections, assessments, vendor audits, third-party certifications and reports for the American Institute of Baking (AIB), American Sanitation Institute (ASI), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Since many of our commercial accounts are considered “sensitive” environments, we design pest management programs that are based heavily on integrated pest management (IPM) principals. IPM principals stress comprehensive inspection techniques, pest prevention and elimination through cultural practices, and using pesticides only when necessary.

Western Exterminator is also Green Shield Certified. Green Shield Certified is an independent certification program that promotes practitioners of effective, prevention-based pest control while minimizing the use of pesticides.

Being Green Shield Certified gives our customers the confidence of an independent, third-party verification that requires we adhere to a strict set of standards when servicing your business for pests.

Trusting your business (or your home) to anyone but the experts is never a good decision, so make sure to choose a company that is interested and committed to protecting your brand.

How can we help your business remain pest-free? Give us a call or send me an e-mail at AskMrLittle@WesternExterminator.com. I’ll be sure to get back to you right away with information on how Western Exterminator can help.

Pests Have No Business
 In Your Business

western

I know I should have been at the gym running on the treadmill after all the turkey, stuffing and trimmings I ate, but who can pass up a two-for-one Black Friday shoe sale before 6:00 a.m.?

A great group of guys and gals, members of our Western Exterminator team, were up early too, (like they are every day) but deals weren’t what they had in mind. They’re my colleagues in Western’s Commercial Services Division who service commercial establishments, usually while the rest of us sleep.

From restaurants to food processing facilities to sports venues to cruise ships and trains, hotels and hospitals, they all need protection from unwanted vermin and Western Exterminator, with our team of highly trained pest professionals, has the expertise for success in these types of accounts.

Protecting a business from unwanted pests is critical not only to public safety but also in protecting our customers’ reputation and brand. Every type of business relies on us to be available day or night to treat for pests who want to free-load in these establishments. Where do you think Menace Mouse spends his free time? It’s usually trying to snag a free meal or night’s stay (who are you kidding, he’ll try and move in permanently!) at any outstanding restaurant or five-star hotel, but not on my watch!

The health and economic risks posed by pests are no joking matter. Pests such as rodents, termites and cockroaches not only spread disease but can also cause thousands of dollars in lost revenue by spoiling food or causing structural damage to buildings and equipment. Ever see what a hungry, misguided roof rat and his mates can do to a roof? It isn’t pretty.
